Why choose this job

Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) is one of Austin’s most dynamic and best-loved nonprofits. The organization is the leader in the no kill movement nationally and is considered a national thought leader in animal welfare. APA! locally rescues, treats, and adopts out 10,000 homeless dogs and cats each year, providing the safety net for Austin’s most at-risk shelter pets, which helps Austin to be a no-kill city, while also assisting other communities throughout the United States in saving homeless animals. The organization is distinguished by the scrappiness of its grassroots, non-traditional, community-based animal rescue work. The organization continues to innovate best practices to save sheltered lives and teaches its renowned no kill lifesaving model to 400 students annually, who attend apprenticeships at APA!’s Maddie’s® Lifesaving Academy, and to hundreds of animal welfare professionals who attend the organization’s annual American Pets Alive! conference. Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) is seeking an Associate Shelter Veterinarian to work with our team of veterinarians, technicians and support staff/volunteers in providing the most effective medical care to our rescue animals, as well as efficient communications regarding these cases. APA! has become one of the country’s No-Kill leaders by innovating and maintaining programs, in turn, lending Austin the title of the largest No-Kill city in the nation. This position plays an important role in maximizing the number of lives that APA! is able to save by providing quality medical care in a cost and time effective manner. This position will consist of both work at the APA! Main shelter location, as well as traveling to other shelters in need of help. Time devoted to other shelters will be approximately 20-30% of total time scheduled. Daily duties will include: treatment and assessment of hospitalized patients, high volume spay/neuter and other surgeries, outpatient exams, treatment of shelter-housed animals, after-hours treatments/triage when on call, maintaining accurate medical records, logs and client/foster/adopter/staff communication and participation in doctor to doctor case rounds and discussion. We are looking for a veterinarian who is excited by the challenge of making quick decisions based on physical examination/carefully chosen diagnostics/history without all the bells and whistles of a full lab/referral hospitals. Clear, concise and efficient communications are desired, as well as the ability to work in a large team environment. This is a full-time, exempt position and reports to the Medical Director.

Our veterinarians typically work four 10-hour days per week with rotating on-call. We have an excellent support staff of some of the best vet techs in the business that take after-hours calls before a veterinarian is notified so most emergencies are taken care of before the on-call vet has to be called in.

Austin Pets Alive!

See what we're all about

Austin Pets Alive! is not your average animal shelter. We pioneer innovative lifesaving programs designed to save the animals most at risk of euthanasia. Our story hasn't necessarily been for the faint of heart. Austin Pets Alive! began when vulnerable, homeless pets truly needed us the most. When we were first imagined, Austin had a kill-rate of 87% – today, we have a save-rate of 97%. Through hardships, we have found inspiration; and through this inspiration, we have saved lives.
